Farmingdale High School (FHS) students in Cara Palermo’s creative crafts classes recently learned how to knit. For this project, Palermo collaborated with math teacher Madeline Grillo, adviser to the FHS knitting club.
Grillo visited the art students and inspired them to create original and unique hats, to be donated to St. Baldrick’s charity event.
Once the students got started, more and more people caught “the knitting fever.” Palermo started a knitting group in her community, producing four hats for the charity event. Teacher aide Paula Chuchul also gathered over a dozen hats from the Fairfield Senior Community where her mother, Joan Beebe, resides.
This project reached far beyond the classroom, inspiring teenagers and adults to pick up their knitting needles and give back to the community.
