The Long Island Rough Riders Women’s team started the 2013 season with a dominant performance, defeating Fredericksburg Impact 3-1. Nearly 1800 fans saw the exciting game, with Amanda Epstein and Luisa Echeverry securing an early lead and Amanda Ferranti adding another goal in the second half.
From the start, the match was filled with drama and excitement—forward Grace Hawkins took her first shot only 20 seconds into the game. Just one minute later, Kayla Pifer’s corner kick found Luisa Echeverry who passed back to Amanda Epstein to secure the first goal of the game.
The Rough Riders controlled the rhythm of play, leading to multiple chances on goal. When Grace Hawkins slid a vertical ball down the right flank, Amanda Epstein’s shot could only be stopped by Impact goalkeeper Pacheco. When Holly Dawson passed deep to Echeverry, however, Pacheco couldn’t do anything but watch the second goal of the day.
To get back in the game, the Impact sent defenders up to pressure the Rough Riders’ defense. The excellent play of the home team secured the 2-0 lead going into halftime, recording a 9 – 3 shot count after 45 minutes.
The Rough Riders came out in the second half exactly where they left off in the first half. The home team was playing attractive soccer, controlling the pace. Grace Hawkins’ attempt in minute 47 beat the keeper, only to hit the cross bar. Georgia Brown’s hard foul on the 18-yard box a minute later was the first sign of Fredericksburg’s increased energy.
Long Island stayed alert and was able to add another goal when Grace Hawkins beautifully passed to Amanda Ferranti who secured the 3-0 lead.
Although the game seemed to have been decided, the Impact had their best moment of the night when Chelsey Haney beat Rough Riders’ keeper Kim Comstock from the left corner of the 18-yard box (80th minute).
This victory puts the Rough Riders in first place in the Northeastern Conference, with three points.
