Nassau BOCES has created a program that will enable special education students to receive college credit as juniors and seniors in high school.
BOCES will team up with Farmingdale State College’s “University in the High School” program to offer dual-enrollment opportunities for those enrolled in any of Nassau BOCES’ Special Education schools.
“Historically, college-level courses have been offered primarily to mainstream students on the presumption that only advanced learners would take these classes,” said School Psychologist Dr. Linda M. Lopez. “Special needs students face a variety of challenges every say, so looking to the future has not always been their top priority. This program helps these students to plan ahead and to consider college as a real option.”
BOCES hopes to increase the number of special education students who attend college and to let them know that college can be an attainable goal.
