The Coming Of Summer At The Life Enrichment Center

This summer our focus is to encourage the community to take full advantage of the center’s day and evening programs to help improve their brain and body fitness.

Fitness For The Brain: “Gray Matters” Brain Conference

The “Gray Matters” Brain Conference, hosted by the Glen Cove Senior Center began with the announcement of alarming statistics: one of every two individuals will develop some form of dementia by the age of 85. Fortunately, the presentations made by a panel of notable professionals gave encouraging information explaining the brain’s ability to reverse or delay some of the damage caused by the disease.

The conference was part of the Glen Cove S.A.G.E. Foundation’s “Campaign Against Dementia.” The foundation’s approach to introduce preventive programming for dementia included a grant to the Glen Cove Senior Center to create a comprehensive eight week “Brain Fitness” program to be offered in their center and shared with centers across Nassau County.

Each presentation touched upon the science of brain health. The overwhelming message: a healthy lifestyle which includes physical fitness, nutrition, stress reduction, and mental stimulation can increase your chances of delaying or reversing some of the affects of dementia.

Exercise your body, eat right, get plenty of sleep and enrich your life through education and cultural activities and you will be on your way to keeping your brain fit!

The center offers a wide-array of activities to include in your ‘brain and body fitness’ programs this summer. In addition to our roster of great day and evening fitness classes, we are now offering an aerobic Tai Chi class on Wednesdays at 12:45 p.m. and a Dancercise class on Thursday evenings. Everyone is encouraged to exercise your brain and body by including a fitness program into your life! Check our June calendar for a complete list of fitness programs, our upcoming events, and life-enriching activities throughout the month.

Our goal for this summer — Have fun, be fit, stay connected and enjoy our programs! Welcome summer!
