Fifteen performing ensembles from the Farmingdale schools performed for an objective evaluation of their skills at the New York State School Music Association Festival (NYSSMA) Large Organization Festival held at Hofstra University. Many school districts participated but Farmingdale sent the largest number of groups and students to be adjudicated by certified judges.
After months of diligent work, each group performed three NYSSMA approved musical selections at a specific level of difficulty. The NYSSMA judges scored the groups on rhythm, intonation, phrasing, dynamics, interpretation, tone and musicianship.
“In preparing for NYSSMA Majors each teacher works very carefully preparing students to improve their sound quality, to become very focused, and to be aware of musical nuances. In the preparation process students improve their abilities and learn to make the written notes transform into beautiful music,” said Rita Zirpolo Padden, fine arts director. “This year I saw teachers incorporate what they learned from last year’s NYSSMA experience and what they learned in this year’s professional development seminars and clinics.“
