Doubleday Court To Host Network Party

Carrying out its tradition of a mid-summer networking party, the Garden City Chamber of Commerce will hold its 2013 Mid-Summer Networking Party on Wednesday evening, Aug. 21. Graciously hosted and sponsored by Doubleday Court at the model of its planned condominiums, guests will have an opportunity to view the model of the future 3-story,  spacious 2-bed/2-bath residences with generous 1,400 sq. ft., or more, of open-floor designs. In addition to kitchens with high-end stainless steel appliances, stone countertops and European cabinetry, amenities will include a 24-hour concierge; state-of-the-art fitness center; roof-deck pool with outdoor kitchen, lounge area; covered parking and personal storage areas. All are welcome to come and view the model, enjoy an array of fine wines and hors d’oeuvres, exchange business cards and just enjoy this mid-summer chamber event. However, advance reservations are required and limited to the first 60 respondents. Fall Benefit Yard Sale

The Garden City Bird Sanctuary/Tanners Pond Environmental Center is pleased to announce its fall benefit yard sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the sanctuary. (Raindate is Saturday, Sept. 14.) The bird sanctuary is located opposite 181 Tanners Pond Rd. The profits from the rental spaces at the sale will benefit the sanctuary and will be used for ongoing environmental educational programs and improvements at the site. Do you hate the idea of having your own garage sale with the hassle of putting up posters all over town, advertising and people tromping on your lawn? This fall, 10-by-17-foot spaces may be reserved for $45, providing sellers with an opportunity to sell their own garage sale items. Donations and fees are tax deductible. The GCBS/TPEC is located opposite 181 Tanners Pond Rd., north of Stewart Avenue and south of Jericho Turnpike. The site is open to the public on weekends from March through November, from noon to 5 p.m., during the summer from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and by appointment. Oktoberfest 2013

The Second Annual Oktoberfest at Resurrection Lutheran Church from 4 to 10:30 p.m. There will be activities for children and families during the afternoon, including games, fall festivities, German music, German food and soft drinks. Starting at 7, the focus moves to adults with authentic Oktoberfest music provided by The Luchow Quartet. German food continues through the evening, imported German beer and wine may be purchased separately. Free commemorative mug. Net proceeds support the missions of Resurrection. Event will take place under a tent on the church lawn along Emmet Place by the entrance to the church on 420 Stewart Ave. Advance tickets are $25; $10, age 12 and under (children 3 and under free) through Sept. 28. August Summer Food Drive

The Garden City Public Library, in cooperation with Long Island Cares Inc. / The Harry Chapin Food Bank, is sponsoring a summer food drive. There is a collection box in the lobby entrance at the library for the public to contribute non-perishable items. The collection takes place through August 29. Long Island Cares, Inc. and the Garden City Library appreciate the generosity of residents to the previous food drives held each summer. Canned goods, dry goods, and snack foods can be contributed. Personal care items, baby care products, laundry detergent, cleaning products, and paper products are also among the most needed items. The donations collected are being distributed to food pantries, senior and children’s day care centers, soup kitchens and shelters on Long Island. Please bring a non-perishable donation on your next visit to the library.

Volunteers Sought For Breast Cancer Program

If you’ve had breast cancer and want to pay it forward become a hotline volunteer. Women and men who are breast cancer survivors and others who are concerned about breast health issues can become volunteers at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program in Garden City. Volunteers can help by doing fundraising and publicity, as well as by answering hotline calls. Hotline volunteers provide emotional support, information and referral services to callers with breast health concerns. Although the program is housed on Long Island, hotline services and telephone counseling are available to callers throughout New York State. Free Breast Cancer Support Group

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is offering a new support group for anyone who has done genetic testing and tested positive for breast cancer. The group will meet on Monday evenings from 7 to 8:30 p.m. for eight consecutive weeks, beginning on Feb. 25. There is no cost for the group; however pre-registration is required. The Nassau County Women’s Bar Foundation and the Alpern Family Foundation sponsor these groups.
