Learn about the historical significance of the holidays and the and whys of celebrating the holidays. All of this, rounded out with engaging discussions sure to light up your holidays. Ages’ Fourth Annual “Savvy Senior Day” Rolling Out Royal Carpet
What: As nominations for Long Island’s “Savvy Senior” remain underway through Saturday, August 31st, Long Islanders are invited to take part in celebrating these remarkable seniors at the Fourth Annual “Savvy Senior Day” on Saturday, September 7, 2013. Presented around Grandparents Day each year by Long Island senior advocacy and resource group, the Association of Generational Experts for Seniors (AGES), this senior celebratory event will feature a variety of food, entertainment and a chance at several raffle prizes donated by a various local businesses and organizations. Sponsorships for products and services are still being accepted; anyone interested can contact 347-886-2574.
Who: The event will recognize all senior nominees with certificates of appreciation and will crown Long Island’s 2013 Savvy Senior King and Queen, who will receive commemorative plaques and gift certificates for professional studio portraits, compliments of Bradford Renaissance Portraits.
How: Savvy Senior nominations are underway until Saturday, August 31. In 200 typed words or less, individuals can submit their favorite senior, along with a photo or video, to: AGES Savvy Senior Award, AGES P.O. Box 774, Melville, NY 11747. Nominations are also accepted via email at savvy2013@agesresourcenetwork.com or directly through AGES’ Web site, www.agesresourcenetwork.com, which also provides further details regarding Savvy Senior Day. Oyster Bay Arts Festival
There will be something for everyone as local artists, musicians, performers, and collectors line Audrey Avenue, South Street and East Main Street in the upcoming two-day Oyster Bay Arts Festival.
An Evening Art Stroll, Saturday, September 21 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The festivities begin with a Saturday evening art stroll through Oyster Bay. Visitors will soak in the treasures of a talented community of artists, and collectors transforming downtown sidewalks into an outdoor gallery. Live music and an outdoor marketplace will complement the artistic experience.
Feed your mind and then feed your appetite – call ahead to make dinner reservations at our many fine eateries.
How about the kids – check the Bay Time Activities website (www.baytimeactivities.com), a parent’s guide to children’s activities in Oyster Bay-East Norwich, for Saturday evening “drop-off” programs allowing parents to stroll and dine while kids have their own artistic fun.
Family Arts Festival, Sunday, September 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This hands-on festival will feature children’s crafts, knitting, pottery, cooking, live music, story telling, dance, martial arts, artist demonstrations, face painting, water sports activities, food, drinks, treats and an artist marketplace.
This festival is free of charge and open to the public, however, some activities will include a fee.

POB Cares and Project PACE
Seeks Volunteers To Assist Senior Residents
POB Cares and Project Plainview Assisting Community Elders (Project PACE), programs of the Mid-Island Y JCC, are recruiting volunteers (18 and over) to help senior residents of Plainview-Old Bethpage. Volunteers are needed to drive clients to local medical appointments, do grocery shopping and minor home repairs. Volunteers are also needed to be friendly visitors or telephone companions to homebound seniors. Training is provided. Flexible schedule – volunteers can make a difference in as little as two hours a week.
