12th Annual Senior Health Expo

Pick Those Pumpkins
Beginning Oct. 5, a field of orange will cover the grounds of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Central Nassau (UUCCN) at the corner of Nassau Boulevard and Stewart Avenue when pumpkins from a New Mexico Navajo reservation are delivered. The sale is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through Halloween, Oct. 31. Homemade baked goods will also be available for purchase. Close to 6,000 pumpkins in various shapes and sizes as well as some variety pumpkins, gourds, and decorative corn are expected. Pumpkins grown in a dry climate tend to last longer than those grown in eastern United States. You are welcome to come to take pictures, wander through the pumpkin patch and purchase a pumpkin if you wish. Admission is free. Anyone wishing to volunteer to help unload pumpkins from the truck is welcome and appreciated, please come by on Oct. 5 or Oct. 19 between 9 and 11 a.m. This is a perfect time for teens to earn volunteer credits. Oktoberfest 2013
Resurrection Lutheran Church will be hosting “Oktoberfest 2013” from 4 to 10:30 p.m. There will be activities for children and families during the afternoon, such as games, German food and soft drinks. Then starting at 7, the focus turns to adults, continuing with The Luchow Quartet providing authentic Oktoberfest music. German food will continue through the evening, including bratwurst, German potato salad, red cabbage and soft drinks. Guests may also purchase imported German beer and wine from the Beverage Garten. New this year will be contests with prizes for Best-Dressed Frau, Best-Dressed Mann, and the Pitcher Holding Contest. Net proceeds from ticket sales will go toward supporting the missions of Resurrection. The event will take place under a huge tent on the church lawn along the Emmet Place entrance to the church. Advance tickets are $25 per adult, $10 per child, and may be purchased online at http://resgc.org/oktoberfest. After Sept. 28, tickets are $35 per adult, $10 per child. Petra’s Promise
Garden City mom Petra Dehler suffered a debilitating stroke last spring. While she is working hard on her recovery, friends and family have rallied together to raise funds to help defray the costs of her long-term care. In the true spirit of friends helping friends, a fundraiser will be held on Petra’s behalf on at 6:30 p.m. at 58 Third St. in Garden City. All are invited to attend this special event. Tickets are $100 per person and can be purchased at www.petraspromise.com. Reserve your spot today. Mingle with neighbors and friends and at the same time help support this worthy cause. As a tribute to Petra’s German heritage, entertainment will include German dancers along with a live band.

Home, Harvest & Holiday Yard Sale
Due to popular demand, the Andy Foundation will be expanding its annual spring yard sale to a second event that will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the St. Paul’s School fieldhouse on the corner of Stewart and Rockaway Avenue behind the main building. The Andy Foundation is also looking for donations for its first fall yard sale. Dropoff date for donations is Saturday, Oct. 5 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at St. Pauls Field House. Andy organizers are looking for donations of holiday items, fine china, crystal, silver, housewares, linens, fabric, jewelry, furs, vintage clothing sporting goods, bikes, art, mirrors, furniture and handbags. New this year is a regifting table where you can donate those thoughtful items you’ll never use. All donations are tas deductible. The Andy Foundation is an registered charitable organization with 100 percent of proceeds going to support children in need. Pasta And Politics With A Chef
The Garden City Republican Club will be holding this event at at the Garden City Senior Center on Golf Club Lane and Eleventh Street at 8 p.m. Attendees will be able to meet and speak with local Republican candidates. In addition, Bobby Scotto, owner-manager of Seventh Street Cafe and his chef will be preparing and serving pasta. There will also be raffle held to win a $50 gift certificate to the Scotto’s restaurant. All are welcome to attend.

Your Widowed Social Group
Y.W.S.G. is a non-sectarian, non-profit organziation of widows and widowers 50 plus years of age. Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month and run from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The meetins are held at St. Joseph’s R.C. Friends of the Garden City Public Library will sponsor a free staging of the musical concert: “I Do! I Do!” on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. at the Garden City Public Library. The story revolves around two soul mates navigating the perils of life and is set to the strains of a tuneful score. It will be approximately 90 minutes with an intermission. AARP Driver Safety Program
Registration begins in person Saturday, October 19th at 9:30 AM at the Reference Desk of the Garden City Public Library for the AARP 55 Alive Defensive Driving Course. The course will be given 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration is limited to Garden City Library cardholders aged 50 and older and must be done in person with photo identification, proof of age (preferably a driver’s license), along with the AARP membership card. A check in payment of $17 for AARP members and $19 for nonmembers for course materials must be made at the time of registration. Cash will not be accepted.

Supermarket Fun Night
This annual event will be hed at the Stewart Manor School gymnasium starting at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. The $5 donation includes admission, two boards, chance at a door prize, coffee and dessert. No one under the age of 18 will be admitted.

Mozart’s Requiem
The Waldorf Choral Society’s 40th Anniversary concert will feature soloists, chorus and orchestra along with George V. Rose conducting his final performance before retiring. Furniture Needed
The A.T.Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop at 109 Eleventh St. in Garden City is looking for furniture to add to its inventory. The shop can use cocktail tables, end tables, consoles, chairs of all types, dressers, dining room tables, breakfronts, servers, secretaries, mirrors, etc….it’s all in demand. If you have a particularly large piece, take a picture and show it to Maryann Caterino at the shop (516-746-8900). Consignees are paid 50 percent of the selling price. There is ample parking and the shop is conveniently located on the lower level of The Garden City Historical Society Museum. All proceeds from the A.T.Stewart Consignment Shop go towards the maintenance and upkeep of the Garden City Historical Society Museum, an original 1872 A.T.Stewart era Apostle Victorian structure.
Monthly Cancer Support Group
Franklin Hospital’s cancer support group meets in the former coffee shop at North Shore LIJ Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream. (Please note the new location for 2013.) The group regularly meets the first Monday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m. It is open to all cancer survivors, including family members and is ideal for people who need someone to talk to about the illness. Discussions include new medicines and treatments, advice on how to cope and also provides emotional support. Free Breast Cancer Support Groups
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however pre-registration is required. Additional groups are formed upon request, including groups for men with breast cancer and family members. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. Clutterers Anonymous (CLA), a 12-step self-help group, offers help and support to those who have clutter problems in their homes or workplace. Volunteers Sought For Breast Cancer Program
If you’ve had breast cancer and want to pay it forward become a hotline volunteer. Women and men who are breast cancer survivors and others who are concerned about breast health issues can become volunteers at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program in Garden City. Volunteers can help by doing fundraising and publicity, as well as by answering hotline calls. Hotline volunteers provide emotional support, information and referral services to callers with breast health concerns. Although the program is housed on Long Island, hotline services and telephone counseling are available to callers throughout New York State.
