Fourth and fifth graders at Lee Road Elementary School participated in the International Day of Peace, an observance of the ideals of peace adopted by the United Nations and observed for the first time on Sept. 21, 1982.
During the week, the students discussed ways to bring about peace and read books on the topic, including Lauren Murphy Payne’s We Can All Get Along: A Child’s Book of Choices and Katherine Scholes’ Peace Begins with You.
The students also decorated pinwheels for peace and wrote pledges to bring peace to their school and the world on dove-shaped paper. The doves and pinwheels were hung in the hallway. Also on display was a large dove cutout on which students signed their names to symbolize their pledge to further the cause of peace in the world.
