Despite starting off 1-3, the goal for the Sewanhaka Indians’ goal remains the same: making the playoffs.
“We are absolutely in the playoff hunt,” said head coach George Kasimatis.
The Indians are coming fresh off of a shootout against Bethpage that they lost 48-40.
“We haven’t played to our fullest potential,” Kasimatis said. “We let a lot of teams escape.”
The offense has been the strength of the team so far this season behind quarterback Jake Mellen, running back De’Ante Gonzalez, and offensive lineman Jemil Are.
“The offense has been incredible so far,” Kasimatis said. “They are so athletic, they are working well together and starting to gel.”
Last game, the Indians had two rushers go for over 120 yards as Gonzalez and junior Brenton Mighty both topped the mark in defeat. Kasimatis credits an improved run game for the success of the offense. The players still believe there is room for improvement.
“We need to get a little more crisp, both on offense and defense,” said Are.
Senior captain and wide receiver, Mahlik Elliot said, “We are a good team, we just need to focus more and step up. We got to play every game the same.”
Despite scoring 40 and 27 points in their last two games respectively, the Indians suffered defeat. That is because the defense has allowed 48 and 40 points the past two weeks. Kasimatis, however, believes they can improve.
“We need to get the basics down on defense. Understand where to line up and just tackle better,” said Kasimatis. “We need more consistent play.”
Senior captain and linebacker, Tyler Reginer said, “It’s going good so far but we have to work harder though, we have to step up.”
The players all have a similar goal for the second half of this season.
“Make it to the playoffs and go far,” said Are.
“Win out and make the playoffs,” Reginer said.
Elliot has an even bigger goal for the Indians this year. “To get to the Long Island championship,” he said.
Kasimatis believes every game is a big game, but admits there was an extra bit of emphasis when Indians took on New Hyde Park Memorial High School on Oct. 12.
“Same district, same town, we are friendly with the coaches, the kids are all friends. It’s a big battle this week,” said Kasimatis.
For the Indians and their playoff hunt, every game is crucial.
“We are jockeying for a playoff position and every week is must win,” Kasimatis said.
