The Farmingdale girls baskball team triumphed over the Hicksville squad, claiming a 36-27 victory after a dramatic fourth quarter comback attempt from the opposing team.
The game featured outstanding defense on both ends, forcing teams to commit a multitude of turnovers stemming from both errant passes and backcourt violations. For much of the game, Hicksville appeared allergic to prosperity, consistently committing costly turnovers. In the fourth quarter, the Dalers were put to the test as the tables turned and the team mounted a comeback.
“We definitely did a good job of turning it around in the second half,” said Hicksville’s Assistant Coach Erin Bren. “The first half just wasn’t good enough. We were turning the ball over; there was a lack of focus. We were looking for some of the girls to step it up,” she added.
The Comets really struggled in the first half, trailing 22-6 at halftime. The Head Coach of Farmingdale, Pete Cerrone, said he felt this was the primary reason that the team had nearly faltered at the end.
“Unfortunately, I had more of an effect on this,” said Cerrone. “I tried to get in as many players as possible. I kind of yanked the string on it a little too soon.”
Lauren Hill had seven points and five assists for the Dalers, with Sam Huebner adding six points and six rebounds. Their defense was the story for much of the game, holding the Comets to two points in the first quarter, four in the second quarter and three in the third quarter. It was a thoroughly dominating effort.
