On Jan. 10, the Northside PTA sponsored a cultural arts event for all the fourth grade students, entitled “A Day in Clay” with artist Cliff Mendelson. As an accomplished artist and teacher, he provided an appreciation for the art of clay through demonstration, hands-on projects and discussion on aspects of culture and art history.
Using examples and photographs of Native American art, Mendelson taught students how to properly create a Native American themed pot. The students then incorporated those techniques to create their own unique, one-of-a-kind pottery.
During the presentation the students got a chance to roll up their sleeves and work the clay themselves along with Mendelson. They were inspired to experiment and learn about ceramics where they each created a hand built piece of pottery. “A Day in Clay” was a wonderful and educational event for all who participated.
