Dare To Wear Red

The Joseph Barry Columbiettes will be hosting a Dare To Wear Red-Women’s Heart Health Dinner and Dance. Featuring singer and entertainer Joe Salemi. Speakers include Legislator Rose Walker and other health care professionals. Cost is $27 per person, which includes dinner, dessert, coffee, tea and soda. There will also be a cash bar. Reservations and checks payable to Joseph Barry Columbiettes must be made prior to Feb 1. Call Pat at 516-433-4186. Proceeds benefit Columbiette charities and scholarships. From 7 to 11 p.m. at 45 Heitz Place.

Defensive Driving Class

Our Lady of Hope R.C. Church will host a defensive driving course. The class will help students become safer drivers, and they can also receive a 10 percent insurance reduction from their liability and collision premium and up to four points will be deducted from their driving record. The cost of the class is $45. From 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. To register or for more information call 516-334-6288.

Great Trials in American History

Don Parker presents an enriching historical program about the importance of trials throughout American history with focus on the Trial of John Brown, an abolitionist who led a raid on the federal arsenal at Harper’s Ferry in Virginia. Parker will also present a portrayal of James Thurber, an outstanding humorist in 20th century America whose versatility was expressed in his cartoons, aphorisms, shorts stories, plays and films. No registration required. 2 p.m.

Reindeer and Snowflake Votive

There are spaces still available for this teen craft activity which will allow you to create a glowing frosty votive. With Shirley Ruby, decorate a glass holder with glittery snowflakes and learn how to make a 3D reindeer. Paint snow on the outside of the glass for a cool-looking project. The votive comes with a battery operated tea light. Materials fee is $4. 7:15 p.m.

Creative Art

Children ages five to eight will create a heart mosaic and sparkle heart made out of clay. There will be another session Feb. 6. Materials fee is $4. Registration is required. 7:15 p.m.

Tax Grievance Workshop with Legislator Rose Walker

Legislator Rose Marie Walker will be holding property assessment grievance workshops for any homeowner who disagrees with the new tentative property tax assessment as shown on their Nassau County Property Tax Impact Disclosure Notice. During the workshop, homeowners will learn exactly how to fill out this simple application. Applications will be provided and are also available at: www.nassaucountyny.gov/agencies/ARC/forms.html  If you have any questions, contact Legislator Walker’s Office at 516-571-6217. From 1 to 3 p.m.

Tiny Tots Storytime

Registration is now underway for this twenty minute storytime full of age appropriate songs and stories for young children. Session dates are Mondays, Feb. 3, 10 and 24 at 11 a.m. You only need to register on one of these dates to be registered in all sessions. For ages two and three with caregiver.

Family Fun Days

Registration is now open for February’s family fun sessions, for children one and a half to four years old. Enjoy an interactive hour with your preschoolers featuring singing, dancing, storytelling, a craft and more. Session dates are Tuesdays, Feb. 4, 11, and 25 at 7:15 p.m. (You only need to register once for all the sessions).

Time For Art

Children ages three to five can create a “heart” mobile and “heart” doggie. Registration is now open for February’s classes. Class sessions are Tuesday Feb. 4 and 11 at 1 p.m. Materials fee is $4.

AARP Tax Aide Registration

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is a volunteer-run tax assistance and preparation service available to low and middle income taxpayers (about $60,000 or less) with special focus on seniors. Tax preparation is by appointment only. Appointments will be given at the following time increments: 1:15, 2:15, 3:15, and 4:15 p.m. every Tuesday from Feb. 4 to April 15. Space is limited. Photo identification is required. Please bring all necessary forms, 1099s, W2 statements and last year’s tax return to your appointment. Registration is ongoing.

Pre-School Storycraft  

Children ages three to five are invited to join us as we have a storytime and enjoy a simple craft. Registration is ongoing for February’s pre-school storycraft sessions. Session dates are Feb. 4, 11 and 25 at 11 a.m. For ages three to five.

Lampwork Glass-Blown Heart Pendant 

Spots are still open for this craft for teens. Create a beautiful “necklace-ready” pendant with Linda Rendina. Embellish a beautiful lampwork heart bead with color-coated flexible copper wire. Teens will be able to slip it onto their favorite chain or cording, when completed. Materials fee is $6. At 7:15 p.m.

Studio Art

There are still spaces available for this session for children ages eight to 11. In the style of M.C. Escher, students will create a heart “tessellation.” Materials fee is $2. 7:15 p.m.

Valentines Day Workshop

Teens are invited to come to a fun evening to understand the importance of Valentines Day with Emilia Baer. Create a Valentines Day card, wrap a gift, and have your present ready to give to the person of your choice. Materials fee is $2. 7 p.m.
