Garden City High School is pleased to present Legally Blonde, the musical, on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28 and March 1, in the Inez Spiers Auditorium. Clergy Cabaret
At 6:30 p.m., The Mercer School of Theology at Garden City’s Christ Episcopal Church and the Christ Church Women present A Clergy Cabaret, featuring Reverend Matt Oprendek, Reverend Canon John Betit and Reverend Canon Stephanie Spellers with local artist Dianna Betit, and Reveremd Canon John McGinty as master of ceremonies. The pre-Lenten gala will include a champagne reception where attendees will be given the chance to meet and greet the musicians. Autograph hunters are welcome. Whether you are looking to discover a new author to read or to find your next book club pick, you are invited to the next meeting of the Garden City Public Library’s reader’s advisory series Title Swap with the Librarians on at 10 a,m. (Note the new time,) Title Swap is a series of programs that gives patrons and librarians the opportunity to share new book titles and briefly discuss them. The Pursuit of Alice Thrift Book Discussion
Elinor Lipman’s The Pursuit of Alice Thrift is the new selection for a book discussion, which will be moderated by Gloria Weinrich at 10 a.m. at the Garden City Public Library. Workaholic wallflower Alice Thrift is a socially inept surgical intern at a Boston hospital. Alice is being pursued romantically by shady social climber Ray Russo until her roommate and her neighbor decide to guide Alice through the social complexities of life. This book discussion will take place in the library’s small meeting room on the lower level. No registration is necessary. Copies of the book are available at the reference desk in the library. This event is sponsored by The Friends of The Garden City Public Library.

Master Of The Manor
Actor David Houston will perform a free dramatic reading of The Manor at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, at the Garden City Public Library located at 60 Seventh St. Enjoy a one-hour performance in the style of a radio drama featuring sound effects & backgrounds from 300 years of American music including Joplin, Foster, Copeland, and MacDowell. Hear scenes from Mac Griswold’s absorbing & startling new history of Long Island’s mysterious island.
Griswold’s The Manor is the biography of a uniquely American place that has endured through wars great and small, through fortunes won and lost, through histories bright and sinister-and of the family that has lived at the manor since its founding as a Northern slave plantation three and a half centuries ago. The Manor was selected for Long Island Reads One Book 2014.
Houston has performed numerous roles: Major Bouvier in Grey Gardens, Friar Lawrence in Romeo & Juliet, Mayor Shinn in The Music Man, Sir in The Dresser, Ben in Death of a Salesman, Herr Shultz in Cabaret, The Old Actor in The Fantasticks, Tony Windace in Dial M For Murder, and Horace Giddens in The Little Foxes.

Free Breast Cancer Support
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however pre-registration is required. Additional groups are formed upon request, including groups for men with breast cancer and family members. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. •Support group for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
•Support group for women post treatment will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
•Support group for young women with breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
•Support group for women with metastatic breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.
•A telephone support group for women with breast cancer will be held weekly for eight weeks from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
Furniture Needed
The A.T.Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop at
109 Eleventh St. in Garden City is looking for furniture to add to its inventory. The shop can use cocktail tables, end tables, consoles, chairs of all types, dressers, dining room tables, breakfronts, servers, secretaries, mirrors, etc….it’s all in demand. If you have a particularly large piece, take a picture and show it to Maryann Caterino at the shop (516-746-8900). Consignees are paid 50 percent of the selling price. The shop is conveniently located on the lower level of The Garden City Historical Society Museum. All proceeds from the A.T.Stewart Consignment Shop go towards the maintenance and upkeep of the Garden City Historical Society Museum.
Volunteers Sought For Breast Cancer Program
If you’ve had breast cancer and want to pay it forward become a hotline volunteer. Women and men who are breast cancer survivors and others who are concerned about breast health issues can become volunteers at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program in Garden City. Volunteers can help by doing fundraising and publicity, as well as by answering hotline calls. Hotline volunteers provide emotional support, information and referral services to callers with breast health concerns. Although the program is housed on Long Island, hotline services and telephone counseling are available to callers throughout New York State. Clutterers Anonymous
Clutterers Anonymous (CLA), a 12-step self-help group, offers help and support to those who have clutter problems in their homes or workplace. Meets every Thursday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 265 Asbury Ave., in Westbury. There are no dues or fees. Monthly Cancer Support Group
Franklin Hospital’s cancer support group meets in the former coffee shop at North Shore LIJ Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream. The group regularly meets the first Monday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m. It is open to all cancer survivors, including family members and is ideal for people who need someone to talk to about the illness. Discussions include new medicines and treatments, advice on how to cope and also provides emotional support.
