Trojan Army tops; five spots captured for March tilt

As part of a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) initiative, Garden City Public Schools sponsors two robotics teams—the LEGO Monkeys and Trojan Army. These two teams and four additional teams supported by Garden City parents competed in the 10th Annual FIRST LEGO League Qualifying Tournaments held at Central Islip High School on Feb. 1 and 2.

Robotics coach Michael Stano monitored the teams’ standings as the competition progressed.

In the fast-paced, multi-disciplinary event, teams competed against each other for prizes in three categories: Robot, Project, and Core Value, plus special Judges’ and Champions’ awards. The middle school’s Trojan Army team took 1st out of 42 teams for robot performance. “That secured our place at the FIRST LEGO League Long Island Championship Tournament at Longwood High School on March 2,” explained team advisor, high school science teacher Michael Stano. “Over 100 teams competed at the qualifying tournament for 42 spots at the Long Island Championship Tournament.”

The Garden City Robotics League captured another four spots at the Long Island Championship, bringing Garden City’s team total to five of the 42 spots in the March competition.
