A 71-year-old man and his dog died in a Sagaponack house fire over the weekend.
Southampton town police officers and local firefighters responded to the blaze on Narrow Lane East, where one resident escaped and James Beres was found dead inside shortly before 6 a.m. Saturday, authorities said.
Bridgehampton, Sag Harbor, Southampton and East Hampton firefighters extinguished the flames.
The victim’s remains were taken to the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office, where an autopsy is being performed to determine his cause of death.
Southampton and Suffolk County police are continuing the investigation into the cause of the fire.
