Dr. Lionel Chan, Advanced Placement Italian and college-level Italian teacher at Syosset High School, will present a professional development workshop titled “Best Practices for Teaching AP and College-Level Italian” for the American Association Teachers of Italian-Long Island on March 7 at 4 p.m. at Harborfields High School.
Working with participants, Chan will explore a thematic unit he has created for and uses with his students in order to discuss curricular goals, performance-based assessments and best practices for teaching and learning Italian at the intermediate-high level of proficiency.
Topics covered will include capitalizing on students’ interest as a driving force in course design; selecting authentic materials for didactic purposes; aligning interpretative activities to Common Core Learning Standards; incorporating critical thinking and creativity in interpersonal tasks; using formative assessments to improve students’ control of language structure; and utilizing aspects of problem-based learning with a contemporary Italian novel.
