David Harounian, deputy mayor of the Village of Kings Point, agreed to 14 hours of community service in exchange for the eventual dismissal of charges that he touched a woman inappropriately last October while at Temple Israel of Great Neck. The announcement came from the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office last week.
According to the DA’s office, Harounian, 74, an importer of rugs who works in Manhattan, also agreed to a do-not-harass order of protection for the victim, Joanna Cronin, 43, resident of Great Neck.
The DA’s office said that the charges against Harounian will be dismissed after six months if he completes his required community service, does not violate the order of protection and does not get arrested again.
The agreement that Harounian entered is called an adjournment in contemplation of dismissal, abbreviated ACOD. It was heard before Judge Susan Kluewer in First District Court. The eventual charge was second-degree harassment, a violation punishable by up to 15 days in jail.
Cronin’s attorney, David Goldstein, said his client was still upset by the incident and that the dismissal of the case would probably be noxious to her, but that nevertheless the community service requirement was “at least something.”
