Students at Hicksville Middle School took to the stage to debut Once Upon a Mattress last weekend. The sixth, seventh and eighth graders put on three spectacular performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
Students were led by director Thomas DePalo, and musical directors Justin Starr and Laurie Haddock. 90 students were on the stage and 25 crewmembers took care of the set, lights and sound.
Once Upon a Mattress is a funny, musical retelling of the classic children’s story, “The Princess and the Pea.” The play tells the story of Queen Aggravain, who has banned anyone in the land from marrying until her son, Prince Dauntless marries. However, she sabotages every princess that comes along. Princess Winnifred, who was played by seventh grader Krisia Romano, is unlike any other princess and manages to outsmart the Queen.
