The women of the Church of Our Saviour, Lutheran, in Manhasset ,recently held their annual baby shower for the benefit of the New Baby Program in the New Life Center in Uniondale. Also in attendance were members from sister churches in Port Washington and Mineola, plus guests from Bayside and Floral Park churches.
Diane Kelly—former Floral Park High School Principal and 14-year volunteer in the New Baby Program—addressed the group as a representative of Lutheran Social Services. She explained that clients for the new baby program are referred by ministers, rabbis, and physicians and their eligibility is certified by Nassau County Social Services. Clients may also participate in the New Life Center’s Food Pantry program. Kelly explained the great need for both these services and thanked the women for their generous donations of clothing, diapers, toys and books.
The teenage women and men participants in the Public Library Teen Zones programs in Manhasset, Glen Head and North Bellmore made 12 baby blankets and 8 pillows as their donations to the baby shower and each student was presented with a ‘Ruth Circle Certificate of Appreciation’ by their respective library directors. These fleece baby blankets are favorites and very much in demand at the New Life Center. Next year the Ruth Circle hopes to engage the participation of additional libraries and their Teen Community Services Programs.
The New Life Center Food Pantry received a whooping 298-pound delivery of food from the Youth Group of the Church of Our Saviour, Lutheran, Manhasset, which had collected the food during its ‘Souper Bowl Food Drive.’ When the teens delivered the food, they also helped the adult volunteers by placing all the items ‘supermarket style’ on the shelves of the food pantry.
The Ruth Circle also collected 28 coats and 30 sweaters for the families of Long Island Veterans through the program at the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary at Glen Head. This ministry will be continued next year.
The Church of Our Saviour, Lutheran, in Manhasset has on-going collections for clean, gently-used baby items and non-perishable food items; these are collected weekly at the church and delivered on a regular basis to the New Life Center.
