Students at South Woods Middle School in Syosset celebrated Multicultural Week from March 24-28 with a variety of in-school activities, culminating in a schoolwide Multicultural Expo. Throughout the week, students were able to explore world cultures via special assemblies on different countries. Each morning, teachers served as guest announcers, reading the day’s announcements in a different language.
The PTA-sponsored Multicultural Expo, held on March 28, featured culture, historic information, traditional artifacts and cuisine from China, Greece, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Pakistan, Philippines, Russia and Turkey. Students were able to travel across the globe during their lunch period to learn and experience a variety of cultures. During the expo, students played various games and performed dances from around the world, including the tinikling dance from the Philippines, a contemporary Korean dance, gomutobi – a Chinese jump rope game, Chinese yo-yo and a Japanese dance.
