The Herricks Model UN class and club recently traveled Washington DC, where they attended the George Washington University Model UN Conference for the sixth consecutive year. They joined over 1250 other students from around the world. This year, the event was run by a number of Herricks alumni, including recent GWU graduate Chris Longman and current students Ben Carleton, Mickey Di-Battista, Blake Goodman and Laura Longman.
All the students did extremely well in committees ranging from a joint crisis committee based on Lord of the Rings to Tammany Hall in the 1880s to the current Chinese politburo as well as more traditional UN committees like UNESCO and the UN Security Council. Senior Will Chung won an outstanding delegate award for his role as head of logistics in the ad hoc committee and Junior Qasim Iqbal nabbed a best delegate award for his role in a committee simulating the Roman Senate in 500CE.
On top of their experience simulating international politics as part of MUN, the group encountered real-world politics in the form of a demonstration against human rights violations in Venezuela in front of the Organization of American States on The Mall as well as a nearby counter-demonstrations in support of the Venezuelan government.
