Saint Mary’s Elementary School in Manhasset will be holding a Blood Drive for Long Island Blood Services, a division of New York Blood Center, on Thursday, May 8 from 8 a.m.- 2 p.m. in the Marian Room located on the lower level of the St. Mary’s Parish Ministry Center.
The School sponsors the Blood Drive as part of an education and community service program, which teaches them about the need for blood, blood types and the requirements to donate. Students interact with members of the Long Island Blood Services team and are known as “Little Doctors” who help them facilitate the program while the technicians work with the donors. The students will help recruit donors by spreading the word to their families and friends about the Blood Drive.
“O negative blood is always in great demand. Only 6 percent of donors can supply this type of blood, which is universal and can be used safely in any transfusion.” says Harvey Schaffler, executive director of donor marketing at New York Blood Center, “Blood drives are held because the need for blood is typically never a planned event. Donor participation is greatly encouraged because we always have to be ready. Once collected, blood is not ready to be utilized for two days.”
There is no substitute for human blood. one in three adults will require a blood transfusion at some point in their lives. Your donation ensures patients in local communities have the lifesaving blood and blood products they need to survive. Together, we can make a positive difference.
