Garden City Public Schools’ 2014 Afternoon Tea for senior citizens and past parents received a landslide of requests for free tickets to this much-anticipated spring event. Even though the “Tea” has been expanded for the fourth year in a row to include as many attendees as possible, the May 1 event is completely sold out.
Styled after a traditional English afternoon tea, Garden City’s event features musical performances by the district’s talented elementary through high school musicians, a K-12 art exhibit, delicious fare provided by local vendors and the school district’s food services. The light tea meal, tea samplings, and dessert will be served by volunteer high school students on elegantly styled tables fitting a five-star catering hall. Local supporting merchants include The Garden City Hotel, A New Leaf Tea Emporium, Alma-Lillian Abruzzo of The Tablescaper, Honestly Delicious, Bagelman of Garden City, Riesterer’s Bakery, and La Bottega, to name a few.
Returning for the second year, the Tea will feature a hat contest with a grand and second place prize for the wonderful chapeaus organizers anticipate guests will be wearing. There are even a few new surprises planned, too. Since tickets are already sold out, the in-person ticket pick-up scheduled for Thursday, April 24 from 4-6 p.m. has been canceled. Tickets for 150 attendees and wait list information for those beyond our seating capacity will be mailed out in the third week in April to applicants who requested tickets using the Spring 2014 Continuing Education brochure form. As the 2014 Afternoon Tea has a substantial wait list, the district is requesting that guests who receive tickets in the mail but cannot attend should contact Dr. Catherine Knight, district coordinator of public information (516-478-1079), as soon as possible. Requests to be added to the wait list can be made by calling Dr. Knight.
