Michael Stano named to Master Teacher program
Michael Stano of Garden City High School has been named a New York State Master Teacher by Governor Andrew Cuomo.
“The Master Teacher Program creates a community of teacher experts dedicated to providing a first-rate learning experience for students across New York, and contributes to our efforts to attract and retain the best and the brightest in our STEM classrooms,” Cuomo said.
Stano is among 215 educators statewide selected for the program. They join 104 Master Teachers announced in October 2013.
The goal of the Master Teacher project is to foster more STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) skills in public schools.
As a Master Teacher, Stano receives a $15,000 stipend per year over four years for participating in the program (total compensation of $60,000). In addition, the program asks that the Master Teacher help mentor other teachers and work to create an environment that supports both STEM education and teachers in the field.
Stano’s work in the Garden City School District has garnered him many fans that include students, parents, fellow staff member and from Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction, Dr. Teresa Prendergast,
“As a New York State Master Teacher, Mr. Stano will have an opportunity to participate in a program that will not only enhance opportunities for his own students, but will provide him with additional experiences surrounding his own professional growth,” Prendergast said. “His willingness to also serve as a peer mentor truly speaks to his desire to support newer teachers entering the profession. No doubt, Mr. Stano’s interest in serving as a Master Teacher truly exemplifies the values surrounding our mission statement- inspiring minds, empowering achievement, and building community. Those fortunate enough to have worked with Mr. Stano can certainly attest to his passion of teaching and learning. We are very proud of Mr. Stano and his accomplishments.”
In August, the state will conduct its first Master Teacher Program professional development conference, “New York State Master Teachers: Inspiring the Next Generation of STEM Leaders.” This event will allow for the Master Teachers to design, lead and participate in professional development workshops. A“Investing in our teachers is investing in our students,” said Cuomo.
It’s a sentiment Garden City High School Principal Nanine McLaughlin shares, as she feels Stano is exactly that kind of educator who fits in well with not only the program, but the students at her school.
