Spring time has finally arrived and that means more people are outside looking for a nice spot to stop and smell the flowers. And thanks to one local boy’s efforts, the Trinity Lutheran Community Garden might be the perfect place to sit and relax. This past Saturday, Boy Scout Troop 291 member Thomas Miller helped install two new benches and shrubbery as part of his Eagle Scout project. Miller was helped by members of his troop to help beautify the area.
“The Eagle Scout project is a mandatory project that is meant to establish long lasting benefit in the community,” said Miller, who is an eight year member of the Boy Scouts. “It is essential to do the project in order to attain Eagle Scout status, which is the highest ranking in the Boy Scouts.”
Miller said that he chose the Hicksville Community Garden as his location for the project because he wanted to beautify the area and give it a natural setting.
“I wanted to make it a nice environment for Trinity Lutheran church members and members of the community to come and sit and enjoy their surroundings,” Miller said.
As part of his project, Miller helped build two wooden benches and poured the cement base to secure the benches to the perimeter of the garden. He also added small shrubs and plantings in the central portion of the garden.
Linda Wolf, who is Committee Chairperson at the Church, said that Miller had worked in the garden before and he proposed his idea for the new benches to the Community Garden Board.
“We thought it would be a great project for the Garden,” said Wolf. “The Garden is four years old and with the new additions over the past few years is starting to look better and better all the time.”
Some of those additions include a vegetable patch that was planted by the St. Ignatius Food Bank and fruit trees that were added to the garden last year.
