Impressive season for Boys JV lacrosse team
The 2014 Garden City Junior Varsity lacrosse team posted an impressive 14-1-0 record against tough league and non-league competitors. Led by Head Coach Tom Flatley and Assistant Coach Brett Hepworth, the Trojans’ high octane offense, which averaged over 11 goals per game, proved too much in most every contest, as a stingy, gritty defense and stellar goaltending held opposing offenses to under four goals per game.
After beating formidable foes such as Syosset, Smithtown West, Massapequa, and Kellenberg pretty handily, the team won a hard fought contest against a perennially strong and a particularly tenacious Wantagh squad by the score of 5–4. Subsequent contests against the likes of Plainedge, Cold Spring Harbor, and Carey proved to be a warm-up for an extremely anticipated match-up against a Ridgefield, Conn. team itching to test themselves against this Trojans squad. After taking an early five goal lead, the prideful Ridgefield team clawed its way back to within three goals, but eventually lost by a score of 12–8.
After impressive wins against Rockville Centre, Long Beach, and Division, the long-awaited matchup against rival Manhasset in early May proved to be a surprisingly defensive battle between two confident teams looking for bragging rights. Highlighted by what seemed to be impenetrable goaltending and stingy defensive play, the Trojans lost the hard-fought contest 3–2, which ended a 26-game win streak that carried over from last year. An extremely decisive win over Jericho capped the season.
The team wishes to thank all the coaches and fans for their support throughout the season. Sophomores playing on this year’s squad include Kevin Johnson, James DeSousa, Stephan Moran, Sean Dillmeier, Brian Leggett, John Simmons, Andrew Ripp, Max Webster, John Wotczak, Michael Gullo, Dan Confort, Doug Mongiardo, Mark Downey, Sam Lucchesi, and Kevin McDougal.
