Mayor’s Report: May 22, 2014

Garden City Women’s Lacrosse Alumni Foundation

I would like to take a moment to recognize the Garden City Women’s Lacrosse Alumni Foundation who had their 1st Annual Alumni game on Saturday, May 10 at Garden City High School. The mission of this organization is to bring support to the Garden City High School Girl’s Lacrosse Team through camaraderie from fellow alumni and community supporters of the program. The foundation will raise funds through sales and sponsored events for equipment, lacrosse trips and other team needs as they arise. Special thanks to Timothy Goettelman, Conrad Hopkins, Kerry McCaffrey, Tara McKennett, Dina Muldoon and Michael Sweeney for their efforts in planning Saturday’s event to support the Garden City Women’s Lacrosse Program.

Congratulations To Adelphi University’s Class Of 2014

Monday, May 19, is the graduation of Adelphi University’s Class of 2014. My colleagues on the Village of Garden City Board of Trustees and I join all of the residents of our Village in extending congratulations to these outstanding young people. They have been a credit to our community and I am sure they will continue to reflect well on Garden City as Adelphi University’s Alumni. We wish the Class of 2014 the very best and congratulate you on your many accomplishments and contributions.

Arbor Day Celebration—2014

Arbor Day is observed in many countries around the world and is said to date back to antiquity when forests and their trees were venerated during religious rites. It was first celebrated in this country in 1872 in Nebraska where trees were planted to counteract deforestation.

The village will celebrate Arbor Day on Thursday, May 22, at 11:30 a.m. on the Sixth Street side of the Central Railroad Station along the back hedge, just east of the parking lot. I look forward to joining the members of the Civic Beautification Committee and the kindergarten classes from Locust Street School who will assist Village Arborist Michael Didyk, in planting a beautiful flowering cherry tree. Within the next few weeks the parks division of the recreation department will be planting new trees at locations throughout the village.
