Clean & Green Main Street

greenPort Washington’s civic pride could be seen on Main Street as men, woman and children took part in the annual “Clean and Green” event that Residents For A More Beautiful Port Washington organized.

After registering in the Long Island Rail Road parking lot, volunteers were armed with rakes, spades, brooms and bags and given instructions on where to clean up on Main Street.

Chores included picking up trash, weeding, mulching and planting. Among the 150 volunteers were students who are Green Team Leaders from the elementary schools, Brownie troops and members of Schreiber Key Club.

Residents For A More Beautiful Port Washington billed “Clean and Green Main Street” as a cooperative community project that included the help of The Town of North Hempstead and Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District.

Sponsors for the event included Sweet Comfort Bakery & Café, which donated coffee and cookies. Mulch, for the tree beds and planters around the LIRR train station, came from The Scotts Miracle-Grow Company.
