Stewart Manor rolls out plans for annual event
There are a lot of things that Stewart Manor does right. One thing in particular is how the village celebrates our nation’s birthday. For it, Stewart Manor has begun prepping and approved the list of street closings for the parade route at its recent board of trustees meeting.
The annual 4th of July Fire Department Parade is slated to begin at 10:30 a.m. on at the corner of Stewart Ave and Fernwood Terrace North. Marchers will then proceed throughout the village along Covert Ave, Salisbury Ave, Dover Parkway, Cambridge Ave and Tulip Ave before returning to village hall.
The day’s festivities will conclude with a public barbecue in the municipal lot near village hall. From 11 a.m. till 3:30 p.m., attendees will be able to enjoy a live performance by His Boy Elroy and plenty of burgers and hot dogs. The barbecue will also feature children’s entertainment in the form of face painting, a dunk tank, and inflatable rides and slides. Fire department hats and t-shirts will also be sold.
“The residents line the streets with water balloons and squirt guns and soak the fireman as they walk the street on the parade route,” explains Fire Chief Tom Skinner. “It’s a great time for everyone from the kids to the grandparents.”
There will also be a special moment honoring the armed forces at the barbecue this year. The Stewart Manor Fire Department started participating in Operation Wounded Warrior ten years ago this July and will be receiving a plaque from the organization.
Deputy Mayor Michael Onorato gave a brief report of the village’s finances later in the meeting. The fiscal year that began in June 2013 ended this past Saturday, May 31. The village has taken in $2,381,802.79 in revenue with $2,422,468 in expenditures as of April 30. “Right now it looks like we’re running right on target,” Onorato said, although the finalized statements won’t be available until July. The board hopes to break even once the totals for the month of May come in next month.
The village will also be hiring a new part-time parking meter attendant who will work mostly 8-hour shifts on Saturdays. The position pays $12 an hour. The board has expressed a desire in the past to utilize increased numbers of parking meters as a source of additional revenue for the village. The Bbard also reported that 294 tickets were issued in the month of April for parking violations.
