The Hicksville Public School District continued the tradition of hosting local senior citizens for a special luncheon this year with a sit down reception held in the high school. The gathering featured a full meal with live entertainment that spotlighted student talent. The back of the room featured an art gallery displaying student work.
“It is indeed our pleasure to have you here to acknowledge your contributions to our community,” said Superintendent of Schools Maureen Bright as she thanked the 150 attendees for their ongoing support. “Hopefully you will see the contributions you made helping us maintain our tradition of providing a quality education for our students.”
Student volunteers happily served beverages, salads, main courses and desserts to the delight of the attendees. The table centerpieces, made by art students, were offered as take-home prizes. The luncheon was an in-house event planned and executed by administrators, staff and student groups.
The jazz ensemble, directed by Jonathan Schmuel, opened the entertainment with three numbers including a snappy version of Rogers and Hammerstein’s “My Favorite Things.” In between meal courses guests enjoyed the musical styling of the High School Vocalists and the Saxophone Quartet. Guests were also treated to a sampling of the recent production of Jay Hopkins and John Hunter’s Iliad, Odyssey and all of Greek Mythology in 99 Minutes or Less, performed by the students in the theater department and directed by Caitlin Cassidy.
