Job Search Like A Pro

The Westbury Memorial Public Library will host a Job Search Boot Camp on Tuesday, June 24 and Wednesday, June 25 at 7 p.m. for people who are unemployed or looking for a new job. The two-night workshop will be led by career, business and retirement coach Stan Broitman, who runs the Long Island-based Best of You Coaching, LLC. The sessions will focus on everything from how to improve your resume, network, write a cover letter, manage references and ace an interview.

Job Search Boot Camp is aimed at people who have been unemployed for an extended period of time (27 weeks or more), those who are employed but looking for something new and mothers returning to the workforce. “Anyone who is seeking a new job or a new career will benefit,” said Broitman, whose company’s mission is to help people get the job they want.

During the two-night program, the career coach will review individual resumes; provide instruction on how to develop both networking and interview strategies; develop a personal brand; and teach job seekers how to write accomplishment-based resumes that include key words.

“Most people have a general resume for every job they apply for and that is not the way it should be. You need to develop an accomplishment-based resume that doesn’t just list years of experience; it needs to show what you have excelled at, what sets you apart,” Broitman said, adding that establishing your own personal brand is also key.

“Employers are looking for more than just key words,” says Broitman. “You need to really get into who you are, what you are a professional at and what you can do for a potential employer. They are more interested in who you are and what you have done than your career objectives.”

With more applicants than jobs available in today’s market, Job Search Boot Camp will also focus a great deal on the interviewing process and provide job seekers with the tools needed to develop their own personal interview strategies.

“Most people do not develop an interview strategy and that is where they fail. You need to know what to say and how to say it,” Broitman said. “It is up to the person being interviewed to keep their finger on the pulse of the interview and adjust their answers and behavior to that interviewer.”

Broitman established Best of You Coaching in 2002 after a career in major corporations managing, training and personal development that spanned close to 35 years and over the past 12 years has been helping people attain new and fulfilling jobs and careers as well providing retirement planning.

Job Search Boot Camp will take place at the Westbury Library on Tuesday, June 24 and Wednesday, June 25 from 7 to 9 p.m. The two-night workshop is free but registration and attendance at both nights is required. Attendees are asked to bring a copy of their resume.
