MacArthur High School students Brianna Abatelli, Mary Cervantes, Clare Del Grosso, Amanda King and Alex Philbin received certificates of merit in the Irish Cultural Society of Garden City’s annual writing contest. In addition, Cervantes was a second-place winner. The five students’ essays were selected from among the submissions of 425 talented writers from 24 schools across Long Island.
Sponsored by the H.W. Wilson Foundation, the writing contest required participants to write a dialogue between two characters in James Joyce’s “A Painful Case.”
Not only were the students required to demonstrate their writing skills, but also an understanding of the depth and context of Joyce’s work.
Principal Kathleen Valentino congratulated the students on their achievements and wished them continued success in their writing.
