DEC Seeks Input On Toxic Site Plan

UNISYS_062014AThe New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is inviting the public to comment on the contaminated UNISYS Corporation site in Lake Success. Citizen input is being solicited on remedies that have been proposed to address the on-site and off-site contamination (the plume of contamination coming from the site).
The public is invited to comment on the amendment to the 1997 Record of Decision proposed for the on-site remedy and also to comment on a new remedy that has been proposed for the off-site contamination related to this Unisys Corporation site. This is all proceeding under New York’s State Superfund Program.
The DEC will be accepting public comments about the proposals through July 14. In addition, the DEC has scheduled a public meeting on June 26 to discuss the proposed remedies and accept public comments.
Lockheed Martin, having purchased the site from UNISYS and accepted responsibility for the clean-up, agrees with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s recently released Proposed Remedial Action Plan, which identifies remedial alternative 2 as the best option for addressing groundwater contamination originating from the former Unisys Site at 1111 Marcus Ave. in Great Neck.
“When compared against other remedial options, alternative 2 is equally protective of the water supply as other options,” says Gary Chambre, senior manager, communications for Lockheed Martin, “while creating the least amount of disruption to the community and area neighborhoods.”
A DEC fact sheet online describes the proposals and includes information on how to comment. Visit: www.dec.ny.gov/data/der/factsheet/130045fs.pdf
This fact sheet is provided to the public by the Division of Environmental Remediation within DEC.
The public comment forum is set for June 26, 7 p.m., at Great Neck South Middle School, 349 Lakeville Rd., Great Neck.
At this meeting, the findings of the remedial investigation and the feasibility study will be presented, along with a summary of the proposed remedy.
After the presentation, a question-and-answer period will be held, during which verbal or written comments may be submitted. Citizens are encouraged to attend.
