Second grade students from Park Avenue Elementary School recently participated in Community Night. The event, hosted by National Grid and The Long Island Children’s Museum, educated students about natural gas.
“’Leading with Safety’ is a great opportunity for students to learn the importance of natural gas safety both at home and school,” said Mike Ruiz, National Grid Director of Community and Customer Management. “At National Grid, safety is our top priority and we believe one can never be too young to start to learn valuable safety tips.”
Students lined up to take a sniff at the natural gas scratch & sniff cards and the expressions on some of their faces were priceless as they smelled the rotten egg odorant that’s added to natural gas. National Grid distributed close to 500 National Grid Emergency Kits, which included the Energy Explorers book, a flashlight, and an emergency postcard with important phone numbers.
“It was wonderful to have National Grid’s participation at the annual Community Night celebrating the Westbury STEM Partnership,” said LICM President Suzanne LeBlanc. “As a sponsor of this important educational program, National Grid staff was able to share not only a multi-sensory science activity, but to see the excitement the STEM program has created among students, faculty and the community.”
The event is part of National Grid’s “Leading with Safety” campaign, a signature program of the company’s Power to Serve Volunteer Program. The initiative is designed to engage school students in natural gas safety and damage prevention as part of the company’s commitment to safety education.
