These youngsters know how to express their belief in water conservation.
Fifteen students from the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District were recently named by the Plainview Water District as winners of the district’s annual Water Conservation Poster Contest. Water District Chairman Joel Kessler and Commissioner Andrew Bader were on hand at the awards ceremony.
Judges chose three winners per grade whose posters conveyed the best message about the importance of water conservation in taps, showers and every other aspect of home use. Bader said that it is encouraging to know that Plainview-Old Bethpage parents are discussing the need to conserve water with their children.
“Nearly 500 students in Plainview-Old Bethpage submitted entries in this year’s poster contest,” said Bader. “It is very exciting to see that parents and children in our community are discussing the importance of not wasting our community’s most precious resource.”
For more than 20 years, the Plainview Water District has helped create public awareness among students in the local community to help protect its local natural water supply. With each poster contest, students are asked to use art to express their answer to an important water conservation question. This year’s question was: “What do I like about our water supply and why do we need to conserve this precious resource?”
Kessler said that the future of water conservation in Plainview and Long Island at large is in good hands with this group of concerned young people.
“It’s an annual tradition to see so many young people in the community participate in the poster contest,” said Kessler. “The quality and quantity of posters that we received this year exhibits that our students in this District are learning about the subject, and that is very rewarding.”
