This weekend Long Islanders will be treated to a show in the sky. A Supermoon will be visible in sky both Friday, July 11 and Saturday, July 12, with the moon at its fullest on Saturday morning at 6:25 a.m.
What is a Supermoon? Scientifically, it’s a perigee full moon, which occurs when the moon is closer to the Earth than normal.
Perigee means “near Earth.”
As the moon approaches the horizon, those of us here on Earth are given the illusion that the moon is much larger and seems much closer than it usually is. According to NASA, a Supermoon can also appear up to 30 percent brighter than average.
The biggest Supermoon of 2014 will occur on August 10, when the moon is at its closest to Earth – 221,765 miles away.
