Crosswalk Checkpoints Planned

crossThe Port Washington Police District is having a “crosswalk safety event” Thursday, July 31, as part of its Pedestrian Education, Enforcement, and Traffic Solutions (PEETS) program.

The event will involve police ticketing drivers who don’t yield to pedestrians at crosswalks. The police are not disclosing the locations they will be monitoring.

The Police District is launching the program as an enforcement and education initiative to help make it safer for pedestrians to cross the street, a police spokesman said.

Funding for the effort is coming from the Police Services Grant through the Nassau County Traffic Safety Board and is provided by the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.

The initiative will combine “aggressive law enforcement with education and low-cost engineering to get more drivers to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, encourage pedestrians to use crosswalks, increase civility and create a more livable, walkable community,” the spokesman said.
