As Cecil Gaines serves eight presidents during his tenure as a butler in the White House, the civil rights movement, Vietnam War, and other major events affect this man’s life, his family and American society. Starring Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey and John Cusack.

Lyle Sheffler
Plainview native Lyle Sheffler, currently based in San Francisco, returns to his home town for a classical guitar recital. Sheffler frequently performs solo recitals and as part of larger muscial ensembles. He brings his talent to Plainview once again, as he plays works by Handel, Barrios, Torroba, Nazareth and others. Concert starts at 8 p.m. in the auditorium at the Plainview library.

The Plainview library presents two showings, 3 and 7:30 p.m., of Philomena. A world-weary political journalist picks up the story of a woman’s search for her son, who was taken away from her decades ago after she became pregnant and was forced to live in a convent. Starring Judi Dench, Steve Coogan and Sophie Kennedy Clark.

Decorating The White House
Former White House and State Dinner decorator Frank Lazzaro’s designs graced the tables of three presidents, the Queen of England, U.S. governors and an Emperor during his career in Washington D.C. Join him at the Plainview library as he displays photographs of his work and shares his unique experiences while working in the White House. Event is at 2 p.m. in the auditorium.

Caregiver Support Group
The Mid-Island Y JCC hosts a professionally led group for primary caregivers and others providing care to a client or loved one at 10:15 a.m. Participants are encouraged to share feelings and challenges and begin to realize they are not alone. The group offers support and strategies for coping as participants develop the knowledge, resources and strength to meet their care giving challenges.

The Plainview library hosts Joel Zelnik and his hottest musicians as they make the stage come alive with swing, 50’s rock, soul, Motown, contemporary, ethnic and move. The concert takes place at 8 p.m. in the auditorium.

Blood Drive
Give blood and save a neighbor at the Plainview library from 1:30 to 7:40 p.m. All donors will receive a pair of tickets to a Mets game. Only two percent of Long Islanders donate blood, compared to five percent nationwide. More than 800 pints of blood are needed every day to meet the needs of patients in more than 50 Long Island hospitals. You could save three lives with one donation. Donate blood and receive New York Mets Tickets.

Take A Book On Vacation
The Plainview library is offering residents the opportunity for long term summer book loans. Through Aug. 30, residents can take up to 10 books out for long term loans without an overdue fee. If you return five books, you may borrow an additional five. For more information, call 516-938-0077.

This 12-step self-help group offers help and support to those who have clutter problems in their homes or workplace.
