A pedestrian crossing the street in Port Washington was struck and killed by a vehicle on August 15.
Police say at 11:57 p.m., 49-year-old Donald Mooney of Lynbrook was walking across Main Street east of South Bayles Avenue from the north to the south side, when he was struck by a dark-colored vehicle in the eastbound lane.
Mooney was transported to North Shore University Hospital for treatment of severe head and body trauma and was pronounced dead at 4:23 a.m.
The vehicle that left the scene was observed and stopped by New York City Police Officers at Braddock Avenue and Winchester Boulevard in Queens at 12:45 a.m.
The vehicle, a black-colored 2010 Ford Fusion had windshield and front end damage, according to police. The investigation led to Port Washington Police Officers responding to that location and arresting Cosmin V. Florea, 34, of Baldwin.
Florea was transported to Nassau County Police Headquarters for arrest processing and his vehicle was impounded for testing.
Florea is charged with Vehicular Manslaughter 2nd Degree, Leaving the Scene of a Fatality and Driving While Intoxicated.
