Now that Labor Day is fading away in our figurative rearview mirror, it’s that time of year when the collective question is asked—what happened to the summer? After getting battered by our fair share of snow, storms and cold temperatures, we were fortunate enough to be the beneficiaries of a relatively mild summer season. Any stretches of scorching temperatures and unbearably miserable humidity were thankfully kept to a minimum with nights cool enough to get away with using a window fan versus the pricier wattage of air conditioners. What may have been bad for PSE&G wound up working out well for its customers, who are still trying to get their financial feet under them as the economy continues its glacial recovery.

As summers go, perhaps the worst aspect of it was the seemingly unending stories about violence whether it was the ongoing Gaza conflict or the assorted controversies with local police around the country or whatever the firearm/gun control tragedy may happen to have been on any given day or week. The one consolation we Long Islanders have is ready and able access to some of the finest beaches in the world. And at a time when summer is winding down to those precious few days when school is still out or on the brink of beginning, and the cacophony of the rat race has at least temporarily subsided to a murmur, it’s good to remind yourself to breathe and bask in the moment before that human hamster wheel starts spinning in earnest once again.
