Katharine Hepburn
The Plainview library hosts film historian and lecturer Philip Harwood as he presents The Cala Lilies Are In Bloom Again: Katharine Hepburn on Film. Harwood will present an overview of the Academy Award-winning actress’s career. Featured will be clips from The Philadelphia Story, Woman of the Year, On Golden Pond and other well-known Hepburn films.

Teens As Leaders
The Mid-Island Y JCC hosts an event for teenagers who are socially conscious, forward-thinking and motivated. This group, which meets at 5 p.m., focuses on improving leadership skills via public speaking worships, listening exercises, working in teams and much more. All participants must perform community services hours and take part in Mitzvah days planned throughout the school year. An interview is required for new members to be accepted. Stress Reduction
Explore the healing power of the self with Meditation for Stress Reduction with John Bednarik at the Plainview library at 7:30 p.m. Bednarik has practiced meditation for more than 30 years. He teaches attendees how to create peace in life in spite of surrounding stress. Experience how this simple technique can be practiced daily for health, serenity and joy.

The Plainview library hosts this program for teens and tweens in grades five through 12. Attendees will make an assortment of locker accessories including a denim locker pocket, magnets and a small locker mirror. Program is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in downstairs meeting rooms A and B.
Chamber Fair
The Plainview library hosts the third annual Plainview-Old Bethpage Chamber of Commerce Craft and Gift Fair. This fun family day runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and features crafts, food, rides and entertainment. Free admission.
Monday, Oct. 6
PSAT/SAT Prep Course
The Plainview library invites teens in grades 10 through 12 to this PSAT/SAT test preparation course from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. This course is taught by state certified teachers and subject specialists. Students are asked to purchase McGraw-Hill Education SAT, 2015 Edition (ISBN: 978-0071831932) prioar to the first session. In addition, a notebook, pen or pencil and a calculator will be needed at each session. A non-refundable check for $85 made payable to the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library will be required at the time of regisatration. Course takes place in downstairs meeting rooms A and B. The Plainview library hosts this event on hospital insurance, outpatient medical insurance, Medicare Advantage and prescription drug coverage at 1 p.m. on Oct. 7 and at 7 p.m. on Oct. 20 in the auditorium. Hosted by Steven I.Semryck, an independent sales representative with more than 40 years of experience in health, life and financial services industry, this seminar will explore the various Medicare options to help attendees determine the most suitable coverage for particular needs.

Movie: The Book Thief
The Plainview library presents two showings, 3 and 7:30 p.m., of The Book Thief. While subjected to the horrors of World War II, young Liesel (Sophie Nelisse) finds solace by stealing books and sharing them with others, while her adoptive parents hide a Jewish refugee in their basement.

In this teen program, volunteers in grades five through 12 will read to children in kindergarten through fourth-grade. Event is from 2 to 2:45 p.m. in downstairs meeting rooms A and B at the Plainview library.

Buddy Game Day
The Plainview library hosts this program for teens. In Buddy Game Day, children in kindergarten through fourth-grade will have a fun afternoon playing board games with volunteers in grades five through 12. Refreshments will be served. Program is in the downstairs meeting rooms A and B.

Annual Crystal Ball Gala
The Hospice Care Network will host its 21st Annual Crystal Ball Gala featuring Casablanca Night at the Glen Head Country Club on Friday, Nov. 14 from 7 p.m. to midnight. Frank J. Sciame, Jr., president and CEO of F.J. Sciame Construction Co., will be the honoree and recipient of the George W. Frank Chairman’s Award. He founded Sciame Construction in 1975, leading the firm to its current position as one of the tri-state’s (NY-NJ-CT) leading construction management firms, with current projects underway valued at over one billion dollars. Guests will enjoy an extended cocktail hour, passed hors d’oeuvres with gourmet food stations, open bar, strolling dinner small plates, dessert displays, entertainment, music, dancing and silent auction. Lions Club Meeting
Serving the Plainview-Old Bethpage and Bethpage communities since, the Lions Club holds dinner meetings on the second Wednesday of every month except July and August. The Lions Club strives to make a difference in local communities and encourages residents to come in and voice their concerns.
