Lake Success Mayor Ron Cooper is delighted to report a “spectacular summer” when he offered a village update to the Great Neck Record. Both new recreational facilities and updated village spaces are being enjoyed by one and all, and the brand new Lake Success Summer Music Festival highlighted the warm, sunny days.
The Summer Music Festival held in early July, the very first such presentation, was held in the Lake Success ball fields. “We hope that this will become an annual event,” the mayor told the Record. “It was terrific,” the mayor said, adding that “over 300 people came.”
And there is more to celebrate in the village, new recreational facilities that include the community building facilities and the brand new village fitness center.
As for housing, with the other villages in Great Neck, tearing down older houses is popular. When a house turns over, sometimes there are repairs, but, Cooper reports that more often the entire house is torn down and rebuilt. “This has been ongoing for man years,” he stated. The mayor also emphasized that all of this rebuilding is carefully monitored by the village planning board. “Our hope is to keep the new homes in character with the rest of the village,” he said.
As for finances, the mayor was extremely pleased to confirm that the village’s finances are “stable, very strong.” He noted that the village has a excellent budget rating.
Although most of the area of Lake Success is developed with private homes, the golf club and a Great Neck Public School Complex, approximately 45 percent of the total tax valuation is residential. The rest of the tax base consists of commercial or industrial property.
Lake Success was the site of the original United Nations complex and the village also home to several pre-1850 landmark buildings still standing: Willets House (1750) at 9 Round Hill Rd.; Provost House (1800) at 280 Lakeville Rd.; Maple Cottage (1814) at 42 Farm Lane and Wooley House (1814) at 325 Lakeville Rd.
Lake Success was settled in 1783 and incorporated in 1927.
Mayor Cooper leads the village board along with Deputy Mayor Stephen Lam and trustees Fred Handsman, Gene Kaplan, Adam Hoffman, David Milner and Alan Mindel.
