Eagle Scout Creates Rain Garden

The Plainview Water District Board of Commissioners Joel Kessler, Andrew Bader and Edward Shulroff thank Michael Milana for his contribution to conserving and protecting the local water supply.

For his Eagle Scout project, Milana created a rain garden that will conserve groundwater and provide nutrients to plant life on the District’s grounds. A rain garden is a planted depression that gives rainwater runoff a place to be absorbed.

“The purpose of the rain garden is to take in all of the runoff and ground water and soak it up like a sponge, holding the water long enough to feed all of the plants,” said Milana. “The plants in the garden are all perennials, so they will keep re-growing each year around June.”

The Plainview Water District was happy to facilitate Milana’s project, as it had clear environmental benefits and embraced environmental stewardship, water conservation and the protection of our local water resources. The project was completed entirely by Milana who recruited troop members, family and friends to assist him, including Carol Meschkow, who was the Eagle Scout Project Sponsor.

“The project is a great example of how every one of us can conserve and protect our water resources,” said Joel Kessler, chairman of the Plainview Water District. “Congratulations to Michael for his hard work and best of luck to him during his upcoming Eagle Scout Board of Review. We look forward to seeing another Eagle Scout in the community.”
