Annual “Fall Festival Street Fair” And Homecoming Parade

On Saturday, Oct. 25, will be a very festive day in our village marked by the Chamber of Commerce’s 35th annual “Fall Festival Street Fair,” combined with the annual High School Homecoming Day Parade. There will be lots of activities for the children including two trackless kiddie trains carrying youngsters 12 years of age and younger up and down Seventh Street, an inflatable “bouncy” house, the ever popular money cube (kids catching flying money) and returning for 2014 to liven up the street will be Fivestone, a contemporary rock band. New this year to the festival will be the Salvation Army Brass Quartet along with young dancers from Broadway Bound of Garden City. There will be sidewalk sales, lots of good food and giveaways. I hope that you are planning to come to this fun day in the village and I hope to see you all there to enjoy the community spirit and fun.

The Chamber’s Street Fair on Seventh Street and Franklin Avenue is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and will run through to 3 p.m. Seventh Street, between Franklin and Hilton Avenues, will be closed to all traffic from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. For your convenience, please use the Hilton and Franklin Avenue entrances to parking field No. 7S and the Stewart Avenue entrances to parking field No. 7N. The High School’s Homecoming Parade will step off promptly at 1 p.m. from the most easterly end of Seventh Street and proceed west along Seventh Street to Cathedral Avenue, north onto Stewart Avenue, west to Oxford Boulevard and north to the high school parking field. The Homecoming festivities and football game will follow the parade at the Warren King Field.

Burglaries In Nearby Villages

There have been numerous burglaries reported recently in adjourning villages. Residents should keep their homes locked and well lit. If equipped, alarm systems should be activated at all times. Residents are urged to call the police department immediately when they observe suspicious behavior in their neighborhood. If you suspect something, please call the police by dialing 911.

Drive With Care – In All School Zones

All motorists are reminded that although there are speed cameras located on Rockaway Avenue by the High School, it is imperative that you take extra caution and drive slowly in all the school zones, not only in Garden City, but everywhere.

Please drive carefully and pay particular attention when driving in the area of recommended pedestrian routes, bus stops and schoolyards. This will not be any different than prior years in that a few preoccupied young people will inevitably dart out from in between parked cars or fail to look for oncoming traffic when crossing the street.

Please drive slowly. While the police and crossing guards are on duty at school crossing zones, many children will be crossing at unprotected areas. Parents are urged to discuss safe practices with their children and to remind them that it is very difficult for passing motorists to see them and affect a safe stop.

A Reminder To Motorists That The Posted Speed Limit In The Area Of Schools Is 20 Miles Per Hour

Board Of Trustees Meeting Schedule

The next regularly scheduled Board of Trustees’ meetings for the month of November are Nov. 6 and Nov. 20 at 8 p.m. I encourage all residents to attend board of trustees meetings so as to be thoroughly informed of village issues from a first-hand perspective.
