On Sunday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m., Cantor Ofer Barnoy and entertainer and Roslyn resident Susan Winter will bring “Rise Up Singing” to Temple Beth Sholom of Roslyn.
They will appear in an evening of music written primarily by Jewish composers that reflect a sense of social and political commentary while being wildly entertaining. The music includes songs from The Great American Song Book, the Broadway stage, folk and contemporary standards, as well as Yiddish favorites.
Winter, an award winning singer, has sold out audiences in famed NYC nightclubs and garnered the prestigious Bistro and MAC awards. Winter was commissioned to create a program by the Kupferberg Holocaust Center at Queensborough Community College. Being inspired by world events, current and past, she embraced her heritage and the power of music, combining musical theatre and history, to create what has become Rise Up Singing.
Cantor Ofer Barnoy appeared in cantorial programs on stages and television stations across America, Canada, and Israel. Barnoy is involved in composing, arranging, recording, choir leading, and teaching. He published a recording of High Holiday selections called Soulful Chants and a recording of Shabbat melodies called Soulful Sabbath, which includes his award winning “LeDor VaDor.” Winter and Barnoy’s special participation is sure to make this an unforgettable event.
Winter’s musical team, headed by collaborating musical director, Alex Rybeck, has raised awareness that music, as political, social and cultural commentary, can also be used to enlighten and uplift. Rybeck is a composer, pianist, and arranger, best known for his work with stars of Broadway and cabaret; including Liz and Ann Hampton Callaway, Faith Prince, Jason Graae, Jeff Harnar, Donna McKechnie, Lee Roy Reams, Rita Gardner, Todd Murray and Kitty Carlisle Hart, among many others.
Theatrical playwright/lyricist/composer Barry Kleinbort joined the team and brought his unique perspective; being a descendant of victims of the pogroms of Bialystok. Kleinbort has directed and/or written material for Brent Barrett, Petula Clark, Penny Fuller, Anita Gillette and many others. He was artistic consultant for Cathouse: The Musical for HBO. His new musical, 13 Things about Ed Carpolotti, starring Penny Fuller, has played off-Broadway and will return to the stage later this fall.
Barnoy, Winter and Rybeck will share the stage with performers on strings: Denise Stillwell on violin, Jered Egan on bass and Sean Harkness on guitar. Stillwell can currently be heard nightly in the Tony award winning musical “Kinky Boots.” Egan has performed in Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, and in cabaret rooms throughout NYC. Harkness has toured extensively throughout America, Europe, South America, the Caribbean, and Japan and even has a Walden 12 string-guitar named for him.
