The Teal Pumpkin Project

There’s no question that Halloween is a holiday for the kids. But what about the kids that can’t enjoy it normally because they have severe allergies? That’s when “The Teal Pumpkin Project” steps in to help.

“The Teal Pumpkin Project is designed to promote safety, inclusion and respect of individuals managing food allergies – and to keep Halloween a fun, positive experience for all,” said Plainview resident Heather Alberti, whose five year old son, Nathan, has a life threatening allergy to peanuts and tree nuts.

“Nathan was diagnosed when he was a year old. Although we are very careful about what he eats, touches and is surrounded by, one mistake can be fatal,” said Alberti. “Parties and holidays can always be scary, especially Halloween because there are peanuts everywhere. Nathan always says “no thank you” when he can’t have something while trick or treating and will exchange the unsafe candy for safe candy at home.”

Participating in the Teal Pumpkin Project to raise awareness for kids with food allergies like Nathan’s is very simple. Pick out a pumpkin, paint it teal and pick up some inexpensive toys and non-candy treats. Download FARE’s sign to show that you have non-food treats to hand out.

“It’s a simple gesture that can have a big impact,” said Alberti.

One in every 13 kids in the U.S. has a food allergy, which equals about two kids in every classroom. Show your support by sharing information on social media and help to raise awareness for this very important cause.

Don’t forget to post a picture of your teal pumpkins when you have them near your door. Use the hashtag #TealPumpkinProject when you post so everyone can see your creation.

Have a happy and safe Halloween!
