Murder, Madness & Poe
On Thursday, Oct. 30 at 1:30 p.m., actor Michael Bertolini will delve into one of America’s great horror story writers via Bertolini’s Murder, Madness & Poe. Written and directed by David Houston, this one-hour play will be presented in the style of a radio drama featuring readings, poetry, music, and eerie sound effects. During this show about America’s unequaled Master of the Macabre, Bertolini will portray a desperate Edgar Allan Poe seeking acceptance for his gentle tales of violence and insanity—in order to revive his faltering life and career with a lecture tour. Hear quotations and complete readings from “The Black Cat,” “Murders in the Rue Morgue,” “The Bells,” “Annabel Lee,” “The Raven,” and “The Cask of Amontillado.” This public program is funded by Friends of the Library. Garden City residents will be given priority by presenting their Garden City Public Library card at the program room door. Non-residents will be accommodated on a space available basis 10 minutes before showtime. No saved seats. Please, no buses. Manhasset Comes To Garden City
The Manhasset Art Association will exhibit a group show in the gallery and showcases at Garden City Public Library from Nov. 4–25. View multi-media professional artwork including pastels, collage, watercolor, oils, acrylics, and photography. In 1948, a small group of Manhasset artists were invited to meet at the home of Helen Jennings. She had a dream of organizing a workshop where artists could work together to develop their talents, exchange ideas and foster a greater appreciation and advancement of the arts in the community. In 1949, a constitution was adopted, and Jennings was elected president. The association held meetings at many different sites, such as the Old Firehouse on Bayview Avenue, Patricia Murphy’s, Manhasset Hall, the old Onderdonk House, the Community Reformed Church, and, at present, the Quaker Meeting House on Northern Boulevard. Today the MMA still offers its members workshops with a live model and three major art exhibits each year. All members are expected to help run the organization, and it is the spirit of cooperation which makes our group successful. Exhibits are free and open to the public during regular library hours at 60 Seventh St. in Garden City. Installation and removal dates are subject to change. For hours and directions please call 516-742-8405 or online at www.gardencitypl.org.
Exhibit funding is sponsored by Friends of the Garden City Public Library.
