Jericho Students Earn Merit Honors

The Jericho School District is pleased to announce that 11 Jericho High School students were recently named semifinalists and 22 students were named Commended Students in the annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Jericho High School students Erica Busch, Sy-Wei Ho, Danny Huang, Taylor Kang, Gene Lee, Bryan Lei, Ien Li, Grace Mok, Rameel Rizvi, Eric Wildstein and Crystal Zheng were named Semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. These scholastically talented students now have the opportunity to compete for approximately 7,600 scholarships, worth $33 million, that will be offered next spring.

Approximately than 1.4 million juniors in over 22,000 high schools across the U.S. entered the 2015 National Merit Program by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Semifinalists, who represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, are made up of the high scoring entrants in each state. The number of semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.

Twenty-two Jericho High School seniors were named Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program. These students, Mikaela Adwar, Jesse Ames, Andrew Chen, Ivy Chen, Stephanie Chen, William Crugnola, Maxwell Goldstein, Hyun Jung, Ji Soo Kang, Brian Kenny, Matthew Kiviat, Nitasha Kochar, Richie Lee, David Leung, Karan Malhotra, Andrew Okeke, Haejin Park, Shamik Shah, Katherine Sheng, Joshua Wabnik, Kevin Wu and Benjamin Yoon were recognized for outstanding performance on the PSAT/NMSQT. Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2015 National Merit Program by taking the 2013 PSAT/NMSQT.

“We are very proud of all of our seniors that have been recognized as Semifinalists and Commended students,” said Superintendent of Schools Hank Grishman. “All of these young men and women serve as exceptional role models for students in our district.”
