Glen Cove Teen Killed in Conn. Crash

A Glen Cove teenager was fatally struck by a car while helping a fellow Long Islander whose vehicle had broken down on Interstate 95 in Connecticut over the weekend.

Derian Garaicoa-Ortega, 18, was assisting a 21-year-old Wyandanch woman whose Honda Civic had become disabled near exit 6 in Stamford when her car was rear-ended by a Hyundai Tiburon early Saturday morning, the Stamford Advocate reported.

The impact of the crash pushed the Civic into the victim, who was taken to Stamford Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the newspaper reported.

The driver, 25-year-old Joe Lopez-Rodriguez of Mamaroneck, was reportedly taken to the same hospital along with two other people involved in the crash who were treated for minor injuries.

Connecticut State Police did not charge the driver and are continuing the investigation.
